A little at first — and that's normal for cashmere, not a flaw. Those early pills are short, loose fibers working their way to the surface, mostly where things rub, like the sides and underarms. The good news: with good cashmere the loose fibers shed within the first several wears and the pilling drops off sharply, instead of going on and on the way cheaper cashmere does. A quick pass with a cashmere comb or stone clears the early pills, and resting a sweater a day between wears and storing it folded keep it smooth for years.

Yes — fine-gauge cashmere is lighter than it looks. It's warm enough for over-air-conditioned offices and cool summer evenings, and light enough to layer in spring without overheating.

Decide first whether you're buying it to layer or to wear on its own. For layering, true to size is usually right — cashmere is thin enough that a close fit still slides under a blazer or coat without pulling across the back. If it's going to be the only thing you're wearing, a size up gives you room to move without reading as oversized. Measurements are listed on every product page, and it's worth checking them rather than assuming: the crews, V-necks, cardigans and hoodies here aren't cut alike.

Most days you won't wash it at all. Cashmere's natural oils do a lot of the work, so the routine is a rest on a rack for twenty to thirty minutes after wearing, then a light steam with the head held above the knit rather than pressed into it. When it does need cleaning, dry clean — tell your cleaner it's a fine knit and ask for low heat and no hard press. Store it folded in a breathable bag with cedar or lavender, never on a hanger. Always follow the care label on your garment; if it differs from this, the label takes precedence.
