Start with the fiber
Cashmere is warm out of all proportion to its weight, which is why a cashmere sweater packs flat and still gets you through a cold morning. Cotton breathes and washes, so it's the one for warm climates, shoulder seasons and anything you'll wear weekly. Blends sit between the two — some of the softness, some of the easy care.
Or start with the shape
Crews are the ones you'll wear most and think about least. V-necks open up the neckline and layer over a collar without bulk. Turtlenecks cover all the way up; mock and funnel necks give you the height without the fold, if a turtleneck feels close. Cardigans and hoodies open at the front, so they go on over what you already picked and come off first when a room warms up.
On color
Black and navy do the quiet work — they sit under everything and read as background. Oatmeal, stone and driftwood show the knit itself, so the texture is the thing you notice. Most styles come in both kinds of color, and the filters above will narrow to yours in a tap.
What holds up
The difference between a sweater you keep and one you replace is usually the yarn and the finish, not the label. Long cashmere fibers pill less and hold their shape. Ribbed bands at the cuff and hem keep the edges from stretching out. Seams that lie flat don't dig in under a coat. Those are the things worth looking at on any product page here.
Keeping them
For cashmere we recommend dry cleaning — it's the safest way to keep the shape and the hand. If you're experienced with washing cashmere, a gentle cool wash and a flat dry works too. Cotton and cotton-blend styles machine-wash cold on a gentle cycle, laid flat to dry. Store everything folded rather than hung, so the shoulders keep their line.
