A shrug or a poncho goes over the top without changing the outfit underneath — no sleeves to work into, no buttons, no fit to get right. A shrug is the smaller of the two. It sits around the shoulders and upper arms with ribbed cuffs, so it covers the part of you that actually gets cold without adding bulk at the waist — which is why it works over a dress for an evening out as readily as over a tee at home. A poncho is larger and drapes further down the body, cut asymmetrically so it falls unevenly rather than hanging square. If you want a little warmth, take the shrug; if you want the layer to be part of the outfit, take the poncho.

Keeping them
Dry cleaning is safest for cashmere and keeps the drape, which matters on an open layer — it's the fall of the fabric that makes it sit right.
